Parakeets

Parakeets are appealing pets for more reasons than just their varied and beautiful colorations. Their ability to mimic human speech, affectionate behavior and playfulness all account for parakeets' popularity as pets.

Since domestication, parakeets (also called budgies) have been bred to represent an amazing array of colors. But in their natural state in the wild their colors are green with wing and tail feathers tipped with black. The tail is blue, with a yellow throat, cheeks and forehead. Although you won't find parakeets in their 'wild' colors, you can find them in pale yellow, chartreuse, light blue, or a cobalt and turquoise combination and also pure white. When choosing parakeets just pick your favorite color as there is no difference in their intelligence or talking skill.

If cared for properly they are usually hardy and can live to be seven to ten years old. Parakeets are not difficult birds to feed; all of the basic nutrients they need are included in a mixture of seeds, green food, fruits, and a vitamin supplement. We have special foods designed just for them and can help you choose the proper green foods and fruit as well. Remember, like people, budgies are individualist in their feeding habits. While one bird may be crazy about millet, another may prefer sunflower seed. A balanced diet is important so don't feed one seed to the exclusion of the others just because that's what your bird prefers.

Parakeets are flock animals so it's very important to provide them with loving attention and company because you are now their "flock." Take time to get to know your bird and your gentle patience will be rewarded with a friendly, affection pet who will give you much enjoyment. Your budgie might even learn to say "thanks".
